Women's Tennis Falls to Marquette

Michael Solomon, The Miami Student

After beating Butler and Detroit in Hamilton in late February, the Miami University women's tennis team returned to action over break, facing off against Marquette University in Milwaukee. The RedHawks lost two key tiebreakers in the match, falling 5-2 to the Golden Eagles.

Marquette got off to a fast start in the singles matches, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before juniors Megan Martzolf and Anastasia Dracheva got the Red and White on the board. Martzolf improved her singles dual record to 8-0 this spring, winning 6-2, 6-7, (5-7), 1-0 (10-7). Dracheva won for the RedHawks at the No. 2 singles position, winning 6-3, 6-1.

In the doubles matches, the RedHawks No. 1 team of Martzolf and Stephanie Danesis dropped their match against the Golden Eagles, but Miami got back even when the No. 2 duo of Brintney Larson and Dracheva won 8-1. In the third and decisive match, pair Riekie Honiball and Cara Wald pushed the match to a tiebreaker, but fell 10-4 in the final game to lose 9-8. The RedHawks next matches come on March 21 against UNC Wilmington and Georgia State.
