Tech Tip | Decisions made regarding new myMiami

Randy Hollowell, Senior Communications & Web Coordinator, IT Services

By now you should be aware that Blackboard will soon be gone for good, and is being replaced by the Niihka collaboration and learning environment. Because of this another change will also be taking place: that being an infrastructure change to myMiami.

Currently myMiami is running on the Blackboard platform. So, when Miami decided to replace the learning management piece with an open source project, it became apparent that the myMiami portal would also have to be changed. A project was created to evaluate different portal products, and after much research and several public forums, it was decide that Miami would pursue a portal solution through CampusEAI Consortium using a product called myCampus.

IT Services is beginning the process of creating project teams that will install the portal system, link it to existing web services, and communicate the processes to the university community. A timetable for all of the work will be made available in the next month or so.

One of the most asked about pieces of myMiami are the Blackboard organization sites, and what will be happening to them. The current plan is for the existing organizational sites to be transitioned to myCampus. Organizational site owners will be contacted in the near future with additional information.

Please check the myMiami announcements often for updates on this exciting endeavor.
