The end is near for the Miami University softball team as they face the last two weeks of the regular season. The RedHawks will travel north this weekend to take on the Bowling Green State University Falcons Friday and then the University of Toledo Rockets Saturday and Sunday. Miami is looking to secure more wins this weekend for their record so they can compete in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament.
Junior Casey Drees believes the upcoming games will be a good matchup as they take on competitive opponents within the MAC.
"These teams know everything about us so these games could be a dog fight to the end," Drees said. "Right now looking at the standings, Bowling Green and Toledo might not have the best looking record, but playing MAC games you never know what could happen. We need to be on our game and play like we know how."
The Falcons are 7-29 overall and 1-12 in the MAC. Bowling Green has lost their last five games, including falling to Indiana University Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) in a doubleheader Tuesday, dropping the first game 12-2 and the nightcap, 5-4.
In regard to Miami's series with the Bowling Green, the Falcons lead a close overall series, 43-41. The Red and White have won five in a row against the Falcons, including a sweep of two games in Oxford last season.
After the 'Hawks finish their double header against Bowling Green on Friday, the team will head to Toledo on Saturday to take on the Rockets. The Rockets are 8-31 overall and 3-9 in the MAC. Toledo had its doubleheader with Western Michigan University rained out last Friday, but split a series with Northern Illinois University over the weekend. The Rockets defeated the Huskies, 7-6, on Saturday before falling 13-4 in six innings on Sunday.
Toledo leads the all-time series, 43-34 with the RedHawks. The two teams played each other this past March at the Miami Invitational. The Red and White won that contest 8-0 in six innings.
Freshman Allie Larrabee is confident the team can work together to perform well against their conference opponents.
"Going in to conference games, we know we'll have to play in some tough games and battle through a lot of adversity to win," Larrabee said. "We're a very talented team and we have a very strong familial bond. We're confident in our abilities and we'll have to bring our A game every day in order to win."
The first pitch of the weekend will be thrown at 1 p.m. in Bowling Green followed by the second game of the series 3 p.m. The RedHawks will take on Toledo on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a Sunday game 1 p.m..
