Virtual 2020 Commencement controversy

Last week, Miami University released a preview image of the class of 2020’s virtual commencement on Instagram which raised mixed reactions and had some students questioning if the university was taking the ceremony seriously.  


Visiting faculty member Michael Scoggins (center), who has been teaching two-credit-hour social dance classes at Miami for 17 years is losing his job due to budget cuts across the university. A group of his undergraduate assistants (UAs) have made a separate petition to reinstate him.

Students speak out in support of visiting professors

When two Miami University sophomores found out many current faculty members won’t have a job at the university in the fall, they knew they had to do something. Makayla Archer and Ruku Pal heard about the changes from friends and professors and came across a petition put out by Miami’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors, an advocacy group for faculty.  


Uptown bars plan to remain open later after Gov. DeWine removed the statewide overnight curfew this week.

Restaurants set to reopen May 15

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced during his Thursday press briefing that bars and restaurants may begin opening as soon as May 15. The reopening will happen in two phases: outdoor seating and patio usage can begin May 15, and indoor dining can open May 21. 


Oxford will follow Governor Mike DeWine's statewide plan for a phased reopening. The first phase began May 4.

Oxford begins to reopen

Oxford is following Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's plan to reopen, which began Monday, May 4. Phase one will include allowing manufacturing, distribution, general offices and construction to reopen.

Students still present research amid coronavirus

Despite the interruption of in-person classes and the transition to online learning, undergraduate students still had a platform to present the research they’ve been conducting over the last year. The 26th annual Undergraduate Research Forum was held online this year on Wednesday, April 29.

Interfaith Center hosts weekly Mindful Moment sessions on Zoom

The Interfaith Center of Oxford is holding free Mindful Moment Sessions via Zoom every Friday from 11:45 a.m to 12:00 p.m. These 15-minute meditation sessions are led by meditation practitioner and Interfaith Center board member, Prince Johnson II. He trained at the Cincinnati Yoga School and serves as a guide for Mindful Moment participants.
