To be a pop trendsetter is to have the weight of an industry on your back. Music's biggest pop stars -- Taylor Swift, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Katy Perry--have been taking huge amounts of time crafting new albums, fighting against the tide of copycats and determining which sonic trends are simply fads or the next big thing. Drake doesn't have that problem. His new albums are almost an annual affair, each release breaking streaming records and amassing hordes of fans.

Wolverine has been the biggest player in the "X-Men" film franchise since it began way back in 2000, renewing the industry's fascination with superheroes and jump-starting Hugh Jackman's career. It's a shame, then, that his first two solo films as the clawed mutant never quite figured out what makes the character so intriguing to countless fans. However, Jackman's ninth(!) and final outing as Wolverine, "Logan," hones in on the most intriguing parts of the character with surprisingly powerful results.

Jordan Peele is known as one of today's greatest satirists largely because of his role in the comedy duo Key & Peele and their much-adored, dearly-missed sketch show. There's no question that 2016 was a rough year. From tragic deaths of icons from practically every field to national crises, international catastrophes and a presidential election-turned-media-circus, there is a lot we're ready to move on from in the new year. On the bright side, 2016 happened to be one of the greatest years in recent memory for music.

Song sampling is at the heart of hip hop. In the early days of the genre, when it was still largely live music that hadn't yet found recording success, DJs would scour funk, R&B and soul records for interesting instrumental breaks in the music. Once they found a catchy one, they would stretch it out and create their own rhythm from it. The best grooves got the most enthusiastic response from the audience.

David Bowie released his 25th studio album, "Blackstar," on January 8 -- his 69th birthday. Two days later, he passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer that had, up until that point, been very effectively hidden from the public.

In 2012, the CW -- the low-budget and lesser-known sister network of CBS -- launched the first season of "Arrow," an adaptation of the DC superhero Green Arrow. It was a low-risk effort by comic giant DC to gain some popularity in pop culture at a time when Marvel's cinematic prowess was only increasing -- the show was a bigger success than people predicted.

"Blonde," Frank Ocean's triumphant sophomore studio album, is the soundtrack for fall, when the weather is pleasantly cooler than the blistering summers and the leaves change color. It's a beautiful period where it's almost impossible not to walk outside in a good mood. Ocean's sound is similarly pleasing, a gorgeous mix of acoustic pop and avant-garde soul with glimmers of electronic R&B.
