I watched around 200 films this year. Most of them were, admittedly, ones I already loved, but a few were new ones released in 2017. Here are my five favorites, ranked in no particular order -- after "Lady Bird" (which is, indisputably, number one).
There are a lot of reasons why I drove around for 20 extra minutes after seeing "Lady Bird" so I could cry about it in peace, and why two of my friends texted me after watching it this weekend to say that it broke them too (in a good, cathartic way).
"Murder on the Orient Express" is dated, in a sense that goes beyond its 1934 setting and director/star Kenneth Branagh's exaggerated facial hair.
Since Jan. 1 of this year, the blue emergency lights around campus have been used to contact the MUPD 20 times. One of these calls was to report a stray manhole cover, and several others were to request vehicle assistance or directions. None were crime-related emergencies.
If you, like me, consumed "Stranger Things 2" in a breathless nine-hour binge and are still hungry for televised horror seeped in 1980s nostalgia, consider CBS' new series "Young Sheldon."
Both displays set up by Miami's chapter of Students for Life of America were vandalized on campus earlier this month, according to the club's president, sophomore Jessie Hicks.
"Gaga: Five Foot Two" premiered on Netflix last month. The documentary feels, often, like we're simply following Gaga around as she talks to herself, unaware of the camera's presence. Sometimes it feels like an aimless but nonetheless aesthetically pleasing indie short. But throughout, the doc provides window after window into the titular megastar's life that we haven't really been privy to before. We all know about her rebranding with last year's "Joanne," the dissolution of her relationship with ex-fiance Taylor Kinney and the terrifying reverence much of her fanbase directs toward her, painting her as a religious figure of sorts.
First-year Katherine Johnson was excited to check her Miami email account for the first time, last spring. But when she logged in, Johnson was overcome by a sense of dread.

The Oxford McDonald's was so crowded on Saturday that when senior Brandon Fogel and his girlfriend arrived, at promptly 1:50 p.m., they had to park across the street.
Oxford's McDonald's is one of around 1,000 locations in the country that will offer Szechuan Sauce tomorrow with its new chicken tenders -- a long-awaited return for fans of the TV show, "Rick and Morty."

We are now officially straddling summer rom-com and winter awards seasons. While horror flicks are obvious choices to indulge in for the next month or so, it would be unfortunate to neglect all other autumnally apt films. Here are eight to watch (or, most likely, re-watch) this season.
