On Jan. 7, a GroupMe of more than 500 Black Miami University students was bombarded with racist imagery by an anonymous hacker. The hacker posted graphic images of lynchings and mocking people with brown skin before being removed from the chat.

At last Thursday’s Meet the B-Frats event, one of the major recruiting events for Miami University’s business fraternities, a hacker seized hosting controls of the Zoom call and took over Pi Sigma Epsilon’s (PSE) presentation with an image of a swastika, verbal threats and homophobic and racist pre-recorded audio.

Mary Beth and John Tinker, famous for their student activism, emphasized the need for students to think critically and speak up for their rights at their keynote address kicking off Citizenship and Democracy Week. The siblings spoke on Monday, Sept. 16 at Miami University's Hamilton campus to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines. The decision was a key victory for the First Amendment and student rights in public schools.

A crowd of roughly 200 people crowded the Phi Delt gates after Mega Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 28, carrying signs with messages of acceptance. Soon afterwards, the group began marching across Miami University's campus chanting "1, 2, 3 smash white supremacy" and "power to the people; no human is illegal."

Miami University's arsenal of interdisciplinary studies is expanding. These additions include a food systems co-major, an organizational leadership major and a data analytics major. There are also talks of including a new cybersecurity major.
