Ohio Senate Bill 1 (S. B. 1) has officially been signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine. The bill provides many changes to Ohio’s higher education standards, one of which is requiring universities to refrain from publicly sharing opinions on highly controversial political issues to keep access to federal and state funding. The goal is for universities to remain seen as objective and unbiased institutions.

I’ve lived on both sides of campus and have frequently visited both MacCracken and Scoreboard markets. It is very rare for me to get a chance to eat dinner before the dining halls close at 8 p.m., so I mostly get my meals from one of the few late-night meal swipe options. This includes Market Street at MacCracken in South Quad, Bell Tower in Academic Quad and Scoreboard in North Quad.

The Ohio House of Representatives is currently voting on whether to pass Senate Bill 1 (S.B. 1), which could greatly affect higher education throughout the state. I have spent the past few weeks looking into the possibilities of this bill and what it could mean for college campuses across Ohio. On the surface, the bill did not seem so bad; however, when reading deeper into the bill, it suggests the opposite.

When applying for housing as a first year, you are forced to choose your top three Living Learning Communities (LLCs). The LLCs are all centered around certain interests, aspirations or majors. However, the freedom to choose your LLC is misleading.

I registered to vote at the beginning of October with no idea of who I would vote for or how I would even cast my ballot from campus. The differences in what each candidate stands for are too far apart for me to feel comfortable making one single decision.
