After a heartbreaking loss in the final seconds of the Mid-American Conference tournament semi-finals, the women's basketball team will compete in the National Invitational Tournament tomorrow night. The RedHawks will host Duquesne University at Millett Hall for the first round of the NIT.

The excitement was tangible at the Quicken Loans Arena this weekend. Miami's fans, though outnumbered, were louder. Miami men's and women's basketball, though statistically inferior to their opponents, were desperate and energized. There was little room for error and nerves.

CLEVELAND -- Miami men's basketball battled to a 71-69 loss to the Toledo Rockets in the quarterfinals of the Mid-American Conference tournament on Thursday evening. Playing the No. 2 seeded Rockets, the No. 7 seeded RedHawks matched the potent Toledo offense in the first-half, but fell behind by 12 in the second half and couldn't complete the comeback.

Miami hockey's season ended in heartbreaking fashion on Sunday night, as the RedHawks lost 4-3 in overtime to the No. 1 St. Cloud State University Huskies. The 'Hawks lost 5-2 on Friday night in Game One of the three-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoff series, but battled back to win 3-2 on Saturday night to force the finale on Sunday.

After disappointing 4-0 and 3-0 losses to No. 11/12 University of Minnesota Duluth this weekend, Miami hockey's losing streak extends to five games. The RedHawks have now been shutout for three straight games -- the longest the team has gone without a goal in its recorded history starting with the 1998-1999 season.

Defenseman Grant Hutton often feeds forward Josh Melnick for transitions out of Miami's defensive zone. Melnick may dump the puck and forward Karch Bachman will use his speed to try to make space in the offensive zone. Forward Carson Meyer may then jump off the bench for a line change and, if defenseman Louie Belpedio is pinching, Meyer might find Belpedio in front of the net.

Though Miami hockey played more complete games this weekend against No. 3/4 St. Cloud State University, the RedHawks' turnovers from poor puck management led to a 5-2 loss on Friday night and a 4-0 loss on Saturday night. It is the third time this season the 'Hawks have been swept by their opponents, and the second time they've been swept by National Collegiate Hockey Conference opponents.
