When I first came to Miami University as an international student, the idea of an “Honors College” was completely foreign. Where I come from, such a thing didn’t exist, so I had no idea what it was, or what I was missing out on. I didn’t apply to the Honors College because I simply didn’t know what it offered.

Let’s face it: We’ve all had those nights where we wake up with questionable memories and an even more questionable bedfellow (hello, traffic cone). This October, let’s skip the hangover and regrets and instead embrace some fun alternatives on and off campus. Here’s a list of activities that will keep you entertained without making you cringe in the morning!

I’ve never liked TikTok or Snapchat or any other social media that is hyper-popular in the United States. One reason for this is that I grew up with different socializing tools and in my teenage years, Instagram and Viber took the lead for young Eastern Europeans. Despite this, social media wasn’t very important, since everyone lived so close to each other and prioritized in-person interactions.

Last weekend, I went flower shopping at Kroger. Walking through the store, I couldn’t help but notice the section dedicated to Valentine’s Day. From overpriced squishmallows to different brands of chocolates, I wondered if the holiday actually meant anything.

When I first walked into Harrison Hall, the home of the political science department, I noticed two things. First, the cozy chairs and couches on the first floor proudly echo the lively conversations between professors and students in the hallways. Second, the gloomy atmosphere compliments a place that has endured history and therefore demands respect.

I have never felt fuzzy about myself. Coming to college, I had all the self-confidence needed to uncover my veils of ignorance and to discover new truths. Almost a year and a half later, I am convinced I knew more about myself and the world when I was 14 than I do now at 20.

Take a walk around campus on a casual weekday evening right before sunset and sit on one of the benches by the seal. The peaceful air and dead silence will creep on you as the students with crossed arms and headphones pass by you.

Whether new or familiar with Miami University’s landscapes, incoming students have one thing in common: the hopes and fears they bring with them as they are leaving what once was and entering a new and important era in their lives.

International students at Miami University make up only a small portion of the student body. To be exact, there are 1,470 of us according to the Office of International Scholars and Services, and this makes it possible for us to cut slack to those who forget about including us in the conversation, the public space, the policies, initiatives and the student body.

It is perhaps a bizarre occurrence that the first article that I am ever writing while studying abroad in the U.S. is about friendship. I am not someone who can firmly describe myself as a good friend, at least not in the modern sense of the word. I am, however, an observer and a friend of actions, and I like to give credit where it is due.
