The man behind the arena: Meet John D. Millett

As the er a of Millett Hall draws to a close, with the potential construction of the new sports arena on Cook Field, memories of the hall are represented through Millett’s iconic and versatile history. Millett first opened its doors on Dec. 2, 1968, to welcome the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team, who defeated Miami in front of 9,135 spectators, 86-77.










Why journalism?

One of the most commonly asked questions when students declare their majors in college is why they want to do what they want to do. Most of the time the answer is to make good money, do something you’re passionate about or follow in a family path. For journalism, that question is a little harder to answer.

The Miami Student named ‘Best College Newspaper’ in the Mark of Excellence awards

Under the leadership of last year’s Editor-in-Chief Sean Scott, and Managing Editor Luke Macy, The Miami Student took home 21 awards on Saturday from the Region 4 Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Mark of Excellence awards ceremony. The Student also claimed the title of best overall newspaper in the region, beating out every student paper at a university over 10,000 students in Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania.



City council and staff weigh options for new fire and EMS staff

After two resignations from a shift captain and a full-time firefighter/paramedic, Oxford Fire Department (OFD) is desperate for a solution to its deficit. At Tuesday’s city council meeting, fire chief John Detherage approached council members and city staff proposing three separate goals for more workers for the struggling fire and EMS staff.
