When I first came to Miami University as an international student, the idea of an “Honors College” was completely foreign. Where I come from, such a thing didn’t exist, so I had no idea what it was, or what I was missing out on. I didn’t apply to the Honors College because I simply didn’t know what it offered.

I’ve never liked TikTok or Snapchat or any other social media that is hyper-popular in the United States. One reason for this is that I grew up with different socializing tools and in my teenage years, Instagram and Viber took the lead for young Eastern Europeans. International students at Miami University make up only a small portion of the student body. To be exact, there are 1,470 of us according to the Office of International Scholars and Services, and this makes it possible for us to cut slack to those who forget about including us in the conversation, the public space, the policies, initiatives and the student body.
It is perhaps a bizarre occurrence that the first article that I am ever writing while studying abroad in the U.S. is about friendship. I am not someone who can firmly describe myself as a good friend, at least not in the modern sense of the word. I am, however, an observer and a friend of actions, and I like to give credit where it is due.
