The Drake Relays and Penn Relays are two of the biggest track and field events nationally, and some of the best RedHawk runners will be competing this week.

The RedHawks have been competing well as they were predicted early on to finish top three in the conference, and they are currently holding the No. 3 spot.

"We have a small squad this year, but as we become a better program we will continue to get better," said Rita Arndt-Molis, head coach of women's track and field. "We can become a national class program, and this is done through midseason events. Our track season is off to a good start. We are third in the conference, and we've got our frontrunners and people who are our key performers."

Runners like Amanda Mirochna, who stormed into the record books Saturday with an astounding 4:26 in the 1500-meters at the All-Ohio Championship, will be sure to compete in the Drake Relays.

Mirochna not only broke the record, she torched it - beating it by more than two seconds. Mirochna was not the only one to make noise April 18 as both junior Katie Lenahan and senior Alexis Lape qualified with strong performances on their own for the NCAA Midwest Regional.

"The Drake Relays are two of the most historic track and field competitions, they are widely respected and elite," Arndt-Molis said.

On the men's side, seniors Pat Sovacool and Michael Veatch will be competing in the Penn Relay, which is the oldest and largest track competition in the United States.

The two will compete against the best in the world, as track powerhouses such as University of Texas, University of Michigan and University of Tennessee will participate.

Veatch is entered in the College 3000-meter Steeplechase and Sovacool will run in the College 5000-meter.
