Roxy to visit MU in search of 10 strong female leaders

The path to success does not always come easily, especially for college girls who are just starting out on their own and taking the first steps to accomplish their dreams.

Roxy, a clothing and accessories company for active girls, will tour six college campuses and surf shops across the country looking for girls to share their story.

According to information given to the university, Roxy is searching for 10 girls throughout the nation who show determination and an inspiration and courage to pursue their dream.

Any girl can tell her story at the video booths Roxy representatives have set up and the one deemed most inspirational by Roxy will win a $10,000 grant to help her reach her goal.

The event at Miami University will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 25 on the back patio of Shriver.

While Roxy is putting the event on, members of Campus Activities Council (CAC) are helping to organize and promote it.

The event is taking place during the week of Springfest, also put on by CAC. Springfest is a week full of different activities in April, this year taking place April 21-25, which CAC says it creates as a way for students to take time away from school to de-stress and relax before finals.

The co-chairs of Springfest are sophomore Robert Nussbaum and junior Marie Pavalko.

Pavalko said she has no idea how Miami was chosen for the "Follow Your Heart" tour but that Roxy had contacted CAC in the middle of March and Vanessa Braun, assistant director of student affairs, passed the information onto the Springfest co-chairs to take control. Pavalko said she liked the idea of the tour.

"(It) seems like something positive to have at Miami," she said.

According to Pavalko, Roxy will give away different promotional items at the event, such as screen-printed flip-flops and T-shirts, along with other prizes and giveaways.

Junior Emily Kemp had never heard of the Roxy "Follow Your Heart" tour, but was very interested and intrigued by it.

Kemp said she liked that it will focus on different girl's journeys to achieving their dreams.

"I think it is a good idea because it gives people an opportunity to express why they are the way they are," Kemp said.

Kemp also said she would be interesting in going to the event.

"I think I would definitely stop by and definitely tell my friends about it because I think it's a good thing that they want a real girl's perspective," Kemp said.
