RedHawks head to Buffalo on heels of huge win

Tom Downey, Senior Staff Writer

Coming off an incredible upset of then-ranked Ohio University (OU), the Miami University football team (4-4) visits the University at Buffalo (1-7) in a Mid-American Conference (MAC) matchup. The RedHawks are looking to improve their 3-1 MAC record.

Buffalo is 0-4 in the MAC and is 1-9 in its last 10 MAC games dating back to last season. However, the Bulls have played well at times, especially at home.

"We will not be deceived with their record," Treadwell said. "Their 1-7 record doesn't indicate what type of team they are. We know we will be going into a hornet's nest and they will be ready to play well."

Since Head Coach Jeff Quinn took over at Buffalo in 2010, the Bulls have struggled against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents, winning only two games. Buffalo is just 6-26 under Quinn.

"Coach Quinn will have his team ready to play," Treadwell said. "When you watch them on film, you see a team that is energized and plays hard. I think that is a credit to the coach."

Redshirt senior quarterback Zac Dysert is on the verge of making Miami history. Dysert needs just 75 more passing yards to pass Ben Roethlisberger as the school's all-time leader.

"I think it is something that will mean more to me a little bit farther down the road," Dysert said. "Right now I just want to put the team first and do whatever I can to make them successful and put them in a position to win."

The Red and White's defense is looking to continue the momentum it gained from its strong performance against OU. Redshirt senior defensive lineman Jason Semmes earned praise from Treadwell following his two-sack performance.

"As a staff, we are really pleased with Jason Semmes," Treadwell said. "He had a tremendous performance. This young man really played one of his better games."

A pair of RedHawks were named MAC East Players of the Week following their performances against Ohio University. Junior wide receiver Nick Harwell was named Offensive Player of the Week after catching eight passes for 138 yards and one touchdown. Freshman kicker Kaleb Patterson was named Special Teams Player of the Week following his three field goal performance. He made kicks from 40 yards, 32 and the game winner from 31.

"We are very proud of Kaleb's continued progress and being more consistent," Treadwell said.

The Bulls have suffered many injuries so far this season, contributing to their poor record. However, Buffalo is starting to get healthy, especially on offense.

The Bulls get back redshirt junior running back Brandon Oliver this week. Oliver has played in only four games this season, scoring three times while averaging 5.5 yards per carry.

Treadwell called Oliver "one of the best backs in our league."

They also return redshirt junior wide receiver Alex Nuetz, who missed the Bulls' last game against Toledo. Nuetz has caught 38 balls for 647 yards and eight touchdowns. As team, Buffalo has only thrown for 12 touchdowns on the season.

The 'Hawks face another dual threat quarterback in junior Alex Zordich. He has thrown for 1,254 yards and nine touchdowns and has run for 501 yards and a score.

The weather might not be great at Buffalo, but that does not intimidate the RedHawks.

"We played Akron last year in a monsoon, and we played pretty well then," Dysert said. "We just got to find a way to get through it."

Jason Semmes agreed with Dysert.

"We're not really worried about the weather," Semmes said. "[We] just go out there and play football."

Kickoff is set for noon Saturday at UB Stadium. Fans can listen to the game live on www.redhawkradio.com.
