Red and White look to get back on track in Michigan

Drew McDonnell, Staff Writer

The Miami University softball team will head to Michigan this weekend as they prepare to play two double headers against the Central Michigan University (CMU) Chippewas and the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Eagles.

While both teams are historically strong, this does not change the way the RedHawks will prepare for their upcoming games.

"We have been trying to focus on ourselves and our team and not worry about what the other team might be doing," pitcher Jessica Simpson said.

CMU is currently 20-12 overall and 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The Chippewas defeated two conference opponents last weekend, Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo.

Central Michigan leads the all-time series with Miami, 57-24. Last season in Oxford, the Chippewas won a pitcher's duel with a 1-0 victory. The RedHawks came back the next day to earn an 8-4 win.

After Miami takes on the Chippewas Friday, the team will continue their busy weekend as they play EMU on Saturday.

The Eagles are the current frontrunner in the MAC. Overall the team holds a 19-7 record and a 6-2 record within conference. Eastern Michigan also played Toledo and Bowling Green this past weekend and had no trouble defeating both teams. The Eagles claimed the win against the Falcons 1-0 and 3-1 and later dominated Toledo 13-1 and 7-0.

Eastern Michigan leads the all-time series with Miami, 41-30. The Red and White won in last year's doubleheader in Oxford. After winning the opener, 3-1, the 'Hawks took charge of the Eagles, 10-1 in the nightcap.

Two losses to Ball State University last weekend dropped Miami to 16-15 overall and 2-4 in the MAC.
