Miami's pre-law fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta, holds a charity date auction Nov. 20 at 45 East Bar and Grill.
Thursday, Nov. 20 was a first for the Phi Alpha Delta pre-law fraternity at Miami University.
Through the combined efforts of seniors Hunter Felknor and Amanda Hoffman, vice president and former vice president of Phi Alpha Delta respectively, Phi Alpha Delta organized its first charity event benefiting Legal Aid Society of Southwest Ohio.
Legal Aid Society of Southwest Ohio (Butler County) is a non-profit organization that provides legal coverage for those who cannot afford it themselves. The association received a total of $335 from Phi Alpha Delta's charity auction.
Phi Alpha Delta is a professional and service-oriented fraternal organization for students interested in the practice of law. According to Hoffman, Miami's chapter of the fraternity, which now boasts 220 members, began in 2006, the same year that Miami started its pre-law program.
Hoffman said that in the past, Phi Alpha Delta members only helped out as volunteers assisting in other charity events.
"This is our first charity event going in alone," Hoffman said.
According to Felknor, the group chose Legal Aid Society of Southwest Ohio as their philanthropy because of its commitment to improving local communities by providing free legal services. The organization strives to resolve serious legal problems of low-income citizens in Hamilton and Wilmington, Ohio.
Felknor said the charity was a pre-professional date auction conceived by a planning committee of about eight Phi Alpha Delta members.
Hoffman reserved Decibel for the event and booked DJ Mike for entertainment. There was a $3 cover donation at the door for all students that included a raffle ticket to win a gift certificate to 45 East Bar and Grill.
Four female and three male Phi Alpha Delta members were auctioned off as dates. Those that purchased these members would later go on a group dinner date at 45 East.

"The event was a total success," Felknor said. "Everyone was dressed to impress. Most guests capitalized on the opportunity to network and mingle with fellow driven pre-professional Miami students ... We like to keep it classy in Phi Alpha Delta."
The event was professional and included Felknor and senior Andrew Miner announcing the auction and raffle.
"I am very much obliged that so many Miami University students are focused on both their future and the future of others," Felknor said.
Hoffman agreed with Felknor that the event was a success.
"I think the charity event went really well," Hoffman said. "I definitely hope it continues next year and can be more organized and that we can make it a (joint) cause with other organizations."
