Panhel, IFC revamp community service committee

Miami University's Greek community is showing its support of the Oxford community with the Panhellenic Council (Panhel) and Interfraternity Council's (IFC) newly created community engagement and service committee.

According to Liz Bowe, vice president of service and philanthropy for Panhel, "This committee has previously been in existence, but was revamped recently for a more effective use of time and efforts for philanthropies and

community service."

The committee plans to work with an array of organizations within Oxford.

According to John Folk, vice president of service and community for IFC, the committee plans to work with various organizations in the community including the Oxford business community, non-profit organizations, the Greek community and the Office of Community Engagement and Service.

Similar to other IFC and Panhel committees, the committee intends to have positions filled annually. Greek members are encouraged to apply for one of the many positions available on the committee. The committee will have five positions available to Greek members including director of publicity, logistics, external relations, internal relations and finance,
according to Bowe.

"Obtaining a position on this committee will allow students to gain applicable experience in working with Greeks for philanthropies," Bowe said. "This opportunity will allow students to further their aspirations to be elected onto a Greek governing council."

Bowe said the various positions will allow the committee to be both efficient and organized.
"By having more specific committee positions, there will be an increased focus and dedication to particular tasks," Bowe said. "Individuals who are chosen for these positions will have to exemplify this stronger focus and dedication."

Junior Kayla Reeg said the new committee is beneficial for Miami's Greek community because it will allow Greek members to participate in activities outside of Miami's campus.
"I think it will be good for sororities and fraternities to do other activities that are not normally associated with Greek organizations," Reeg said.

"We are excited to begin the interviewing process and select our new committee.  We encourage everyone to apply," Folk said.
