Opinion | Rape doesn't just happen far away; campus dialogue needed

A.M.*

I am an avid reader of The Miami Student and I enjoy most of what I see in the issues. However this week something struck a wrong chord with me and I feel strongly about voicing my concern.

In the Jan. 17, issue there was a comic in the Editorial Section, which I know was meant to be funny and looking past my stipulation it is. The comic is commentating on a big campus problem, which is not being addressed.

The cartoon shows two policemen, one from Oxford, one from New York City, discussing the issues they face every day. The NYC policeman discusses a rape, while the Oxford policeman addresses underage drinking. The fact that people only believe that rape happens in movies or in alleys in New York City is a problem. This is something I hope The Miami Student could be helpful in moving to encourage more awareness in the community.

Let me elaborate. I have been in your newspaper before, however under an anonymous face. I was in the newspaper about a campus rape. Ever since this occurred my eyes have been opened to how desensitized not only this society, but also this campus is to things like rape and sexual assault.

The only exposure people have with this kind of issue is from "Law & Order" and cartoons like this. The fact that your paper submits cartoons about rape being distant is only hurting the problem that this campus has about not being properly educated on the topic of sexual assault and rape, something I hope will change.

*It is the policy of The Miami Student not to publish anonymous letters to the editor. Because the author of this letter is a rape victim with an upcoming court date, the editors have decided to publish this submission anonymously, although we know the identity of the author.
