Opinion | Miami response shows concern for student safety

Editorial Editors, The Miami Student

After the ice storm hit the Oxford community Tuesday, the focus was on how the grounds crew and administration at Miami University would respond.

Ultimately, because of the safety hazard of walking on icy sidewalks, the university made the decision to cancel morning and afternoon classes Tuesday and all classes Wednesday.

The editorial board of The Miami Student is grateful to the grounds crew and administration for their quick response in dealing with the dangerous weather conditions.

The concern for student safety and the tireless efforts of the grounds crew is very much appreciated.

Not only were the sidewalks icy, but also limbs and telephone lines were heavy with ice, making any walk outside treacherous because of falling debris.

Precautious measures and a speedy response during bad conditions indicate good communication between the grounds crews and administrative officials. After grounds crews realized the ice was too much to be adequately controlled for safety and subsequently relayed this to the university, the administration responded with the necessary actions. Thank you to everyone who is working hard to keep Miami students safe.

Although on-campus sidewalks were controlled, off-campus walkways were still dangerous.

The board encourages students living off campus to be aware of ordinances and contracts that require them to clear the walkways of their residences.

Uptown businesses should also take the necessary actions to ensure pedestrian safety by cleaning sidewalks of snow and ice. When bad weather hits, the Oxford community should be prepared.

Overall, a job well done by the Miami response team that secures the campus and works long, cold hours during bad weather. We certainly appreciate your hard work.
