Retired Miami University employees who worked for ten or more years in an administrative position will soon receive a special designation of administrator emeritus.
The Unclassified Personnel Advisory Committee (UPAC) along with the President's Executive Committee and university senate decided last week to reinstate the administrator emeritus designation, which has not been in effect since 2003.
Steve Snyder, secretary to the board of trustees, said the honor is being reinstated in appreciation of administrative personnel's dedication to the university.
According to Miami's Policy and Information Manual, the designation of administrator emeritus is given to an individual who retires from Miami with at least ten years of continuous full-time service in an administrative position. Employees will receive this honor automatically, unless there is a specific recommendation not to do so.
Kate Rousmaniere, chair of the educational leadership department, said nothing is solidified yet as to what this designation of administrator emeritus will consist of, but those who receive faculty emeritus are granted access to library recourses, continued use of a Miami E-mail address and special parking passes.
Snyder said this decision was sparked two years ago when an administrative employee voiced interest in reinstating the honor. Snyder said he has also been an active proponent for the policy. He said the award is a way to honor employees who have worked at the university for several years and is also a way to keep them connected to the Miami community.
"Any time you can thank someone for service to an organization, I think that is a good thing," Snyder said.
According to UPAC chair Doug Curry, the committee is made up of 12 diverse individuals who work in departments across the campus and at the regional campuses. Every year, four individuals who want to serve on the committee are nominated and serve a three-year term.
The title of administrator emeritus is given to administrators from all three campuses.
"The honor recognizes staff members, their lives and careers at Miami," Curry said.
Also, since the designation hasn't been in effect since 2003, individuals who retired since 2003 and would have been eligible will be given this honor. Snyder expressed his hope that those eligible and who didn't receive the designation would receive a retroactive status of administrator emeritus.
