As of June 9, 3691 students have confirmed enrollment for fall, Special Assistant to the President for Enrollment Management John Skillings announced at the June 9 board of trustees academic and student affairs committee meeting.
This is up 10.7 percent from last year, or 357 more conformations.
As far as applications go, Skillings said Miami Univeristy was up modestly, about 1 percent, and that they university has admitted about the same number of students as last year.
Skillings attributed the increased yield rate to scholarship programs and increased communication with potential students, including the engagement of the entire campus in the admission process through different programs.
He said the incoming class has an average ACT score of 26.1 and an average grade point average of 3.6. Of the high schools that gave class rank, incoming students averaged around 18.6.
The class is also 12.5 percent multicultural, up from 9 percent in 2007, Skillings said.
Increases were seen in the number of Access Initiative students as well as transfer students.
The Access Initiative, a scholarship program for students whose family income is less than $35,000 per year, saw 203 new students last year and 228 students this year.
There have also been 30 more confirms with transfer students compared to last year, Skillings said.
Skillings said all of these increases have been an improvement, but more can be done.
"There's been some progress but not as much as I'd like," Skillings said. "On the whole, it's been a successful recruiting season."
Barbara Jones, vice president for student affairs, was enthusiastic for the incoming students.
"We're very excited about the new freshman class," Jones said.
Skillings said one challenge this year will be finding a new person to take over the enrollment management job, as on-campus interviews will begin in July with a hopeful start date for the new hire in early fall.
Skillings also said recruiters have been hired specifically for the east coast and California regions, and they will begin this year.
