Miami women's basketball takes on MAC’s top-scoring offense

The Miami University women's basketball team concludes its three-game home stretch when they play Akron University Saturday. Miami is 3-12 overall and 0-4 in the Mid-American Conference following a 60-54 loss to Central Michigan University. Akron is 12-2 overall and 2-1 in the MAC. The Zips lead the MAC in scoring (80.3 ppg) and scoring margin (+15.7). On the contrary, Miami ranks 10th out of 12 teams in scoring (55.4 ppg) and is tied for last in scoring differential (-11.7). Head coach Cleve Wright recognizes the challenge in stopping a top-scoring offense. "You might prevent them from scoring some, but we need to put points on the board to compete," Wright said in his weekly press conference. "We have to get points out of our possessions. Our points per possession is very low, either from turnovers or shot selection." Freshman guard Baleigh Reid and junior forward Jessica Rupright lead the RedHawks on offense. Reid averages 9.4 points per game and Rupright tallies 8.8. Akron is one of two schools nationwide to have a pair of players ranked in the Top-40 scoring. Junior guard Anita Brown leads the Zips with 20.1 points per game. Senior guard Sina King is the second leading contributor, totaling 20.4 points per game. She has eight double-doubles this season. Brown and King are ranked second and third in the MAC for scoring. "Defensively, we need to try to get as many stops as we can," Wright said. In terms of that defense, the Red and White depend on junior forward Hannah McCue, who has 17 steals and 11 blocked shots in 15 games. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in Millett Hall.
