Miami MAC opener delayed

The Miami University field hockey team was originally scheduled to have its Mid-American Conference opener this weekend at Ohio University, but is postponed to a later date because of issues with the Bobcats' field. The game will now be played Wednesday Oct. 23.

"We are going to play Ohio, when we play them, it doesn't matter who we are playing we are going to play our game and each game we are playing to win," Senior midfielder Emily Gruesser said.

The RedHawks will still host Michigan State University Sunday.

"We usually take each game as it comes so we would have started by focusing on Ohio, but since we can't play them this weekend, we are now looking at Michigan State, and while it's not a conference game we are taking it as seriously as one," Senior midfielder Jordan Long said. "They are another Big Ten school, so they are always physical and fast, but we are ready to tackle that."

Michigan State is 4-6 on the season and Miami is 5-6.

"Michigan State is a really good team and they will always come out hard, and they have a lot of good skill, so we have to make sure we are focused and disciplined on our defense," Gruesser said.

Long said the team has everything it needs to get more wins.

"We definitely have that energy and attitude to win now, and the only thing that can add on to how we've been doing is getting that win, if we play together on offense and defense and support each other throughout the field we will come away with the win," Long said.

Gruesser said the 'Hawks' approach to practice this week will also determine the outcome of the game. She is looking for the RedHawks to have intensity and focus in practice.

"Ultimately we have to make the decision to win before we even step on that field," Gruesser said.
