'Student as scholar' fails as presidential rhetoric

I read in the pages of The Miami Student with anticipatory excitement that the new Miami University president, David Hodge, is embarked upon an unprecedented feat: turning Miami students into student "scholars." I muttered to myself, "How wonderful, how elevating, how uplifting."

Then I remembered: all new leaders offer grandiose promises as a rite of passage. Didn't the new president's immediate predecessor promise to make Miami University "first in 2009?" And it's only three months away. And where is that president? Why, enjoying his $300,000 pension on the golf courses of New Mexico.
