FIJI suspended after illegal party

Amanda Seitz, Campus Editor

Miami University has suspended Phi Gamma Delta, better known as FIJI. The suspension will be in effect from Dec. 17, 2010 to May 30, 2011.

The fraternity was sanctioned for two Student Code of Conduct violations.

The Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution found the fraternity responsible for holding an off-campus party Sept. 11.  At one point during the party, an underage student reportedly became intoxicated. The party reportedly became unruly and the Oxford Police Department was forced to get involved.

The fraternity appealed the original sanctions the Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution handed down.

In the first hearing, held Oct. 11, the Office of Ethics and Student Conflict Resolution issued a three-year suspension for the fraternity.

At that time, the fraternity appealed this sanction to the university appeals board, which upheld the three-year suspension.

The fraternity then appealed the decision to Vice President for Student Affairs Barbara Jones Nov. 5.

Following the second appeal, the sanction was reduced to a semester-long suspension.

If FIJI violates any of the sanctions during the shortened period of suspension, the original three-year suspension will be reinstated.
