The Miami University field hockey team (7-8, 2-1 Mid-American Conference (MAC)) celebrates International Day 5 p.m. Friday in a non-conference game against Appalachian State University (2-10).
The team is working with the Miami University International Student Organization (MUISO) to celebrate not only the diversity on the team, but across the whole campus as well. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Mueller is the vice president of the MUISO.
There are four international players on the RedHawks roster. Mueller, freshman midfielder Bea Dechant and freshman midfielder Leni Gross are from Germany, and sophomore forward Valentina Neira is from Argentina.
"It is very important that it will be our international student awareness day," Mueller said.
Senior back Casey Lammando leads the Mountaineers with five goals on the season and sophomore midfielder Dana Wetmore is second on the team with four.
Four RedHawks, including Dechant and Neira, are tied for the team lead with five goals. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson has started all 12 games for Appalachian State. Anderson has a 4.91 goals against average and a .687 save percentage. The Mountaineers are being outscored this season by an average of 4-2 and are being outshot 17.8-10.2.
For the RedHawks, Mueller, who was named MAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season last week, has made 11 starts on the season. She has a 2.36 goals against average and a .774 save percentage. Miami is being outscored by an average of 2.07-2.13 and is getting outshot 11.9-14.1.
"We know that it's not going to be an easy game; none of our games are easy," Neira said.
