The number one seeded Miami University RedHawk men's ice hockey team is again carrying our university's name to national prominence. Only four games stand between the RedHawks and becoming the national champions, but losing any of them would end the season. A crowd can turn the balance of a game. In a March 3 letter to students, Head Coach Enrico Blasi wrote, "our continued success on the ice is in large part due to the atmosphere you create through your unrivaled enthusiasm during games."
This Saturday, the RedHawks will face the first of four hurdles on the way to becoming national champions. They will face the University of Alabama - Huntsville Chargers in the regional semifinal at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind. If victorious, they will face either Bemidji State University or the University of Michigan 8 p.m. Sunday. In post-season play, there is little margin for error and small things can make a big difference. As Rico's words demonstrate, the impact of the audience is no small thing. The Red and White has made our university proud, and the editorial board of The Miami Student calls on all students to do what they can to support the team this weekend. Fort Wayne is only slightly over two and a half hours away. Our support is more needed and important now than it has been all season. We should support a team that is putting Miami on the map.
The university and athletic department should also step up their game. Miami provided bus service for students to see the football team lose to the University of Kentucky at the "Rumble at the River." Although Fort Wayne is a more distant destination, the importance of this game and the success of the team seem to merit some kind of university-organized transportation.
Ultimately, the team is playing the game and the outcome will be a result of their actions. However, we can give our team an edge or we can let opposing fans dominate the arena. No matter the outcome of this weekend's play, the team would appreciate our support, and those who attend will be rewarded with lifelong memories. Grab a friend. Get in a car. Drive to Indiana. Wear something red. We'll see you there.
