Even weekend wakes up soccer team

They will not concede. They will not relent. Even though the Miami University soccer team ended this weekend with a loss, Head Coach Bobby Kramig can't say enough about his team's persistent personality.

"I really like that the team is resilient," Kramig said after the RedHawks' 2-1 loss to the University of Toledo. "They never quit. They never give up. It says something about your character when teams do that. I think we are fine. We have to tighten up a few things, but overall there is no reason for us to be anything less than confident in this league."

Friday, the Red and White (10-4-1, 3-2-1 MAC) caged a Ball State Cardinal team 3-1 with the game never in doubt. Senior Brooke Livingston found net first with a skull score in the 35th minute off Sam Whitmore's corner kick contribution.

"The win over Ball State was a big win for us," Livingston said. "It was a weird atmosphere. It took a little while for us to score, but once we did we put three goals in the back of the net. That was a pretty strong win for us and a good win on the road."

Courtney Clarke then dished to a streaking Giselle Mangal for the second score before Dani Fraelick notched the third score for the 'Hawks for a 3-1 win over the Cardinals (6-7-0, 0-5-0 MAC).

The RedHawk reserve showed Sunday when the team was invited to Toledo for a matinée. The contest was scoreless until the Rockets (10-2-2, 6-0-0 MAC) found net in the 60th minute.

With the referee's wristwatch ticking, the Red and White played with urgency and knotted things up when freshman Katy Dolesh assisted senior Thompson in the 76th minute.

The knot was tight and both teams showed why they lead their respective Mid-American Conference (MAC) divisions by the time the clock read 90 minutes and overtime beckoned.

It took nine minutes for Jaimie Morsillo to strike in the extra period when the Rocket ricocheted the rock between the posts off of a corner kick.

"Toledo is a very good team," Livingston said. "We had trouble getting out of our own half in the first half. We switched our formation to a 4-5-1 and ended up playing a lot better in the second half. We gave up a goal but came back when Julie put in a goal. It was just one of those days where things didn't go our way."

After the defense conceded the decisive score, Kramig expressed his displeasure for the lack of execution.

"It was annoying because it was something that we had spent a considerable amount of time practicing Saturday," Kramig said. "I don't think we need a major overhaul. We need to do what we do a little bit better."

The Red and White stay in Oxford this weekend when they host the Ohio University Bobcats Oct. 15 and the University of Akron Zips Oct. 17. Kramig looks for his crew to swipe some more MAC home victories so they stay on the top rung of the East Division ladder.
