News of Herbst's appointment was released Monday in a letter sent by President David Hodge to deans, chairs and directors at Miami. Colgate also put out a news release Monday afternoon.

Herbst will replace Colgate's interim president, Lyle Roelofs, as of July 1, 2010. According to Colgate's release, Roelofs has been filling in for the previous president, Rebecca Chopp, who became president of Swarthmore College.

Herbst said he had been involved in this search for the past couple of months.

"It's an exceptionally distinguished university and undergraduate institution," Herbst said of Colgate. "It's devoted to liberal arts and a distinguished high standard for education."

Herbst has served as Miami's provost for five years. He said he would most miss his colleagues at Miami and will stay dedicated to his work during the remainder of his stay in Oxford.

"I'm fully committed to Miami during the spring term," Herbst said. "There is a tremendous amount we are doing now. It's full speed ahead as far as I'm concerned."

Since coming to Miami in 2005, Herbst "has helped build Miami's quality through many important initiatives, including the adoption of the Global Miami Plan, a new scholarship policy that allows students to utilize their scholarships for study abroad" and many other initiatives, according to the letter released by Hodge.

The release by Colgate also said he helped design the Miami Access Initiative, providing tuition and fees for families with limited means.
