ASG elects 7 new student senators

Associated Student Government (ASG) spent the majority of its first senate back from winter break by welcoming seven new student senators.

According to president pro tempore Brendan Buholzer, the seats were vacated this semester when two student senators went abroad, one graduated and two senators were asked to resign by ASG's Oversight Committee due to poor attendance.

Junior Adam Clampitt-Dietrich, who served as an off-campus senator last year before studying abroad in the fall, was elected by the senate as a fraternity senator. Junior Matt Hoffman, who had previous experience on the academic affairs committee, Residence Hall Association (RHA) and as a SOUL, was elected senator of Stoddard, Elliot, Bishop and Wells halls.

Sophomore Lidija Gnjatic was appointed by the senate as a sorority senator.

Additionally, senior Elizabeth Duval, senior Thomas Flynn, junior Sean Jacobson and sophomore Michael Solarz were elected out of a field of seven by the student senate to be seated as off-campus senators.

The senators took no time moving from the customary guest section of Harrison 111 where ASG meets every Tuesday, to the reserved section of the room allocated for student senators.

Jacobson sat in most ASG meetings last semester, and was excited to join the organization he had observed for months on end.

"I've been looking forward to this all Christmas," he said. "I'm a poli sci major, so the government process just fascinates me."

Jacobson, who will serve on ASG's Oxford Tenants Organization and lobbying committee, also said he was impressed with how much ASG affects campus life. He hopes to bring forth legislation to bring down the costs of visiting families to dining halls this semester.

Duval, who was involved with Miami's College Republicans, sailing team, and the senior legacy campaign before joining ASG her final semester in Oxford, is excited to work with all off-campus residents, both students and permanent, to build bridges between the two communities.

"I'm happy I got it," she said. "It's important to include our permanent residents off-campus."
