A Miami University student was detained and then released from a Danish prison following an altercation with an Uber driver which occurred March 31.

Owen Ray, a junior majoring in Russian, East European and Eurasian studies, along with a non-Miami student, were detained in the Copenhagen airport after a dispute with their Uber driver the previous evening, according to the Oxford Free Press.

Following national media attention, Ray was released on April 14, but remains unable to return to the United States. In a statement to the Oxford Free Press via a spokesperson, Andy Ray and Sarah Buchen-Ray, Owen’s parents, said that while they were relieved Ray was released, they remained concerned as Danish authorities have “confiscated” his passport.

“[Danish authorities] will not allow him to return to the United States – something we understand is unusual in Danish court proceedings,” the statement said.

Copenhagen police said the two students were charged with common assault.  A spokesperson for the police department told ABC news that their initial 10-day, pre-trial detention was extended until April 24.

In an interview with Good Morning America on Tuesday morning, Ray said that he had done nothing wrong.

“We were both just very shocked about the fact that we were arrested over this incident,” he said.
