Chappell Roan first played her newest song, “The Giver,” way back in November on “Saturday Night Live (SNL).” Now, she has officially released the song.
While I am a big Roan fan, “The Giver” did not necessarily live up to my hopes for a new song from her. Do not get me wrong, I love everything she stands for with the song, but it is not something I want to listen to on repeat.
However, even before the song was released, she and her marketing team won me over with the marketing campaign. Between being a lawyer, construction worker, dentist, plumber and detective, she truly showed how she “gets the job done.”
One of her first iconic looks to appear was the lawyer on a few different billboards across New York City, Los Angeles and Nashville. The billboards all displayed iconic phrases like “Your ex’s worst nightmare,” “They’ll take it like a taker,” “Ew… someone had a little accident” and of course, the iconic “I’ll get the job done.”
Other billboards and signs also showed fun, catchy phrases. When Roan was dressed as a dentist, the sign said “Dental dams aren’t just for dentists.” Signs with Roan as a private investigator had phrases like “Don’t tell your husband, I won’t” and “I saw that.” As a plumber, the sign said “Showing crack is back.”
All of the billboards and signs also had the phone number “620-HOT-TO-GO.” When dialed, a southern voice instructed the listener to press one through five for either a lawyer, construction worker, dentist, plumber or detective. Each option played a quick sound before playing a few seconds of lyrics from “The Giver.” Then, the line hung up.
All of her signs, social media posts and campaigns had my social media feeds blowing up. She has successfully targeted the feed of freshmen in college and won me over too. I already knew the song was not my favorite from when she performed it on “SNL,” but I still could not wait for the release.
Now that the song is released, along with continuing to fill my feed, she has released a lyric video. The video hints at a few other upcoming songs, one being “The Subway,” which was first performed in June of 2024, and I am still eagerly waiting for its release. The video had an ’80s feel to it and made me feel like I needed to buy “The Giver” on vinyl as soon as possible.
While the song may not be my favorite, I fell in love with her marketing campaign. I also fell in love with everything she stood for in the song: a woman can do anything a man can.
