On Feb. 18, Miami’s Associated Student Government passed a constitutional amendment to add Section 7, “To act in a non-partisan manner at all times,” to Article I (“Purposes”).
During the meeting, Speaker Pro Tempore Nick Barry, who introduced the amendment, said partisan will be considered anything divided sharply between partisan sides.
“When partisanship is brought up,” Barry said, “it creates division.”
The current ASG constitution is available on its website. If passed by the student body, the amendment will add Section 7 under “Purposes.” There is currently no language about partisanship, and the addition of section 7 is the only change.
Students can vote on the amendment on the Hub March 17 through March 19, concurrent with the Student Body President and Vice President Election. The amendment needs a simple majority to pass.
