Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE), a fraternity at Miami University, was placed on summary suspension last week.
According to Kimberly Vance, director of the center for student engagement, activities and leadership, the fraternity was placed on summary suspension after a report was filed. The report stated that an incident of hazing occurred during the recruitment period. Miami is now conducting an investigation looking into the event.
“The Office of Community Standards and the dean of students made a decision to place the chapter on summary suspension while those allegations are being investigated,” Vance said. “That is typically done when the allegations are reporting something that is considered to be an immediate concern for the safety of the members.”
Summary suspension means the chapter cannot proceed with or host any official activity until the investigation has ended. This also means SAE cannot continue with their new member process. Investigations can take weeks to resolve, as the conduct officers will interview members of the fraternity in order to corroborate the story.
Hazing is prohibited by Miami’s code of conduct, and by Ohio code, section 2903.31. Students can file a report through the Office of Community Standards or file an anonymous report through EthicsPoint.
