The Miami University RedHawks women’s basketball team (12-8, 6-5 in conference play) earned its second-consecutive victory over the Eastern Michigan University Eagles (1-20, 0-11 in conference play) on Feb. 5. Miami outscored the Eagles 68-45.
For the fifth time this season, four RedHawks scored in the double-digits. Sophomore guard Enjulina Gonzalez contributed 20 points, and sophomore forward Amber Tretter scored 14 points while finishing with two turnovers, blocks and steals.
Miami’s defense caught 28 defensive rebounds, its fifth-most of the season, and stole the ball 16 times. The RedHawks kept any Eastern Michigan player from scoring more than 10 points.
The RedHawks last won back-to-back games on Jan. 11 against the Bowling Green State University Falcons and Jan. 15 against the Northern Illinois University Huskies. Miami has struggled to stay above .500 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play in its last five matchups.
Junior guard Brooklyn Thrash buried a 3-pointer to give the Eagles an early lead in the first quarter. Redshirt sophomore guard Elena Cabello doubled their advantage, and the Eagles scored an additional 10 points while holding Miami to eight.
With two minutes left in the first quarter, the RedHawks scored six unanswered points to close the gap 16-14 after 10 minutes of play.
Sophomore guard Núria Jurjo gave Miami a 17-16 lead early in the second quarter. The RedHawks padded their score, and Jurjo extended their advantage 30-26 before the teams left for halftime.
Miami fans witnessed a dominant third quarter, as the RedHawks scored 25 points while holding the Eagles to 10. Gonzalez contributed 11 points during that time, including two shots from behind the arc.
The fourth quarter saw Miami continue its domination, taking a 20-point lead with two minutes left in the game. The RedHawks took their sixth win in conference play 68-45.
Miami rose to No. 5 in the MAC over the Western Michigan University Broncos (9-12, 6-5 in conference play).
The RedHawks travel south this weekend for a non-conference matchup against the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns.
