Recap: Women’s basketball rolls to three-straight wins with victory over Ragin’ Cajuns

The Miami University RedHawks women’s basketball team (14-8) continued its winning streak on Feb. 8 with a 60-59 overtime victory against the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns (10-12). 

Despite outscoring the Ragin’ Cajuns 18-8 in the second quarter, Miami gave up the lead late in the third quarter. Graduate student guard Nubia Benedith sank a 3-pointer to give Louisiana a 43-41 advantage with nine minutes left in the game, and the Ragin’ Cajuns kept their lead until the last minute. 

Going into the final seconds of the fourth quarter, the RedHawks trailed by three. First-year guard Tamar Singer sent the game into overtime with her third 3-pointer of the day to even the score 55-55 with two seconds on the clock. 

Sophomore guard Enjulina Gonzalez gave Miami the lead with a jumper, and graduate student guard Maya Chandler widened the lead with a 3-pointer. Louisiana mustered up four points but was unable to take the advantage back, giving the RedHawks their third-straight victory by one point. 

Singer played her best game of the season, scoring a season-high 17 points while shooting 7-10 on field goals. She also rebounded the ball four times and finished with two assists and two steals.

Gonzalez continued her streak of games with double-digit points with 11 while adding eight defensive rebounds. Senior forward Katey Richason followed with nine points, her second-most this season, while Chandler, junior guard Camille Jackson and sophomore guard Lakresha Edwards scored six each. 

The RedHawks combined for 31 defensive rebounds, tied for third-most this season. The team also blocked the ball five times and finished with nine steals. 

Benedith led the Ragin’ Cajuns with 15 points. Graduate student guard Erica Lafayette, Louisiana’s leading scorer, closely followed with 13. 

Miami resumes Mid-American Conference (MAC) play on Feb. 15 against the Kent State University Golden Flashes. The RedHawks stay on the road for two more games, returning to Millett Hall on Feb. 22.
