On Jan. 30, Miami University Athletics announced a contract extension for men’s basketball head coach Travis Steele through the 2031-32 season.

Steele, 43, has been at the helm of the men’s basketball program since his hiring in March of 2022. Before arriving in Oxford, he was the head coach of the Xavier University Musketeers from 2018-22.

"I am excited to announce this well-deserved extension for Coach Steele based on the fantastic work he has done in his time here at Miami,” athletic director David Sayler said. “The improvement of our record is apparent to all, but his excellent work in recruiting and building a team culture that all Miami fans can be proud of has really been the key to our success.”

In his first season, Steele led the RedHawks to a 12-20 record and a Mid-American Conference (MAC) playoff berth as the eighth seed. His team has only improved since then. In his second season, the RedHawks had a record of 15-17, the most wins for Miami in a single season since 2018-19.

The RedHawks have already tied that total in 2024-25 with just over a month remaining in the regular season. They sit second in the MAC with a 15-5 record as well as a 7-1 standing in conference games – the program’s best start in MAC play since 1998-99.

Steele’s recruiting and consistent improvement on his prior seasons earned him a six-year contract extension, keeping him with the Red and White to to work towards their ultimate goal of a MAC Championship and a March Madness bid.

"I want to thank President (Gregory) Crawford and David Sayler for extending my contract here at Miami,” Steele said. “I am blessed to be able to work at such a great place. We are going to continue to build the men's basketball program so that we are competing for championships both on and off the court."
