Miami University released two potential locations, Cook Field and the corner of Southwest Quad, for a new on-campus basketball arena in a recent release and email to students. The Cook Field option shows the entire field, both the grass and artificial turf areas, as the proposed location. The Southwest Quad location is where Bonham House, Joyner House, Wells Hall and Williams Hall currently stand.
The announcement is the first information shared by Miami since the Board of Trustees passed a resolution to award up to $3.5 million for architectural services in December. The proposed final cost for the project will be more than $200 million, according to David Creamer, Miami’s senior vice president for finance and business services.
The announcement stated: “Ideally, the site of a new multipurpose arena would be centrally located on campus, within walking distance for students and to Uptown Oxford, able to hold multiple events concurrently, and could better host university and city events, such as lectures, convocations, concerts, career fairs and graduations.”
The Cook Field location would place the arena near a proposed hotel and restaurant and keep Pulley Tower in place, according to the release. The arena would replace Cook Field which holds spaces for intramural sports, student organization fairs and recreation space for students.
The Southwest Quad location would replace four buildings that are scheduled to be demolished, with the Myaamia Center in the Bonham House being the only program without a defined future home. The recently-appointed committee of faculty, staff and alumni chose the Southwest Quad location as an option because of its proximity to Goggin Ice Center, Campus Avenue Garage and the Rec Center.
The committee said it “is confident that potential impacts to intramural spaces and parking availability in these locations can be mitigated or offset through concurrent campus planning initiatives.”
The release ended: “As Miami considers this and other potential projects through the strategic planning lens, it will prioritize those projects that benefit students and the community and strengthen the local economy of its campuses.”
A survey was released with the announcement and is open until Feb. 3.
