The Talawanda school district placed one of its teachers on administrative leave Nov. 18.

Talawanda School District has put a teacher on administrative leave following two students being cited for marijuana possession, according to an online statement published by the district early Tuesday, Nov. 18.

According to an Oxford Police report from Nov. 6, Talawanda Middle School gave two students juvenile citations for possession of a controlled substance.

After fifth period, two students exchanged a black fanny pack containing a quarter ounce of marijuana in front of the school’s resource officer. According to the police report, the officer detected a strong odor of marijuana during the exchange. After the bag was searched one student told the principal that he had the marijuana because he intended to sell it.

“[The student] was aware of what was in the black fanny pack and the pack was given to him by a teacher … because the odor was so strong,” according to the report.

Along with the marijuana, the pack also contained a cell phone and a THC vape.

The district was made aware of the incident on Nov. 13 after members of the community began discussing it online. The teacher was placed on leave Nov. 18, and the district opened an investigation. The district’s statement also said that not all information on social media was accurate.

“This is another reminder that student information is confidential, and student discipline is also confidential,” the statement said.
