The Miami University RedHawks women’s basketball team (2-1) bounced back from Sunday’s loss with a 84-53 victory against the Tiffin University Dragons (1-2).
Sophomore forward Amber Tretter scored two to start a 14-2 stretch that allowed the RedHawks to take the lead in the first quarter. Sophomore guard Lakresha Edwards paved the way with nine points in the first quarter, with Tretter and first-year guard Emily Bratton putting up six and five respectively.
The second quarter began with Miami up 31-11. Defensive stops, including three steals from sophomore guard Enjuliana Gonzalez, allowed Miami to take a 22-point advantage going into half.
The Dragons scored 17 in the second quarter, eight more than in the first, but the RedHawks outscored them by two. Seven of Miami’s 19 points came from Gonzalez, with Bratton bringing in five more.
Up 50-28 in the third quarter, the RedHawks added to their score with a 6-0 run, including two jumpers from Tretter and sophomore guard Núria Jurjo and a one-on-one layup from Tretter.
Fifth-year guard Hennessey Luu-Brown played her first minutes of the game and scored two. She assisted Bratton in another two, and Bratton shot a free throw to put Miami up 63-28.
Sophomore guard Riley Irwin ended Tiffin’s scoreless streak in the third quarter with a 3-pointer. Sophomore guard Tomi Hinkle and first-year guard Lyv Lindeman added two more 3-pointers, and the Dragons finished the third quarter down 68-40.
A Luu-Brown shot from behind the arc started Miami’s scoring in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Cori Lard added two to the streak, and the RedHawks went 11-13 from there to take their victory 84-53.
Miami held a lead through every minute of play. After the game, head coach Glenn Box expressed how important the opening quarter was for the RedHawks’ success.
“I thought our kids did a tremendous job getting [us] off to a good start,” Box said. “We played with a lot of energy, more so than what we had, I felt, at Xavier.”
Bratton led the RedHawks with 14 points. The first year contributed three points against Appalachian State but didn’t play against Xavier.
“Emily has got a lot of firepower,” Box said. “I regret not playing her at Xavier … She’s a talent, and she gets physically stronger. She’s going to really help us.”
