Their trip to Michigan last week resulted in two losses, but the Miami University RedHawks (6-6, 3-1 in MAC play) returned to Oxford and dominated the Ohio University Bobcats (4-7, 1-3) in a Sunday afternoon matchup.

The RedHawks earned their first point when graduate student midfielder Garcia Negrete found the net three minutes into the first quarter off a penalty corner from senior midfielder Carlie Servis. Negrete leads the RedHawks with eight goals on the season.

Senior striker Katherine Groff earned her first goal of the season three minutes later with an assist from Servis. The Bobcats cut the RedHawks’ lead to one after first-year midfielder Marie De Grande scored in the final minutes of the first quarter.

For the rest of the game, the Bobcats couldn’t find the net again.

Going into half, the score remained 2-1. Seven minutes into the third quarter, Servis got the ball to junior back Becca Lawn, who earned her second goal of the season and brought Miami up 3-1.

One minute later, Servis had her fourth assist of the game and her 10th of the season, and graduate student midfielder Paula Peña Martinez brought the RedHawks up 4-1.

Ohio couldn’t turn things around for the rest of the third quarter. When senior striker Reese Wearren added another goal for Miami, the Bobcats fell apart. Graduate student back Meela Kopp had a chance to score on a penalty shot, but junior goalkeeper Nicky Sjouken held the Bobcats to one.

In Miami’s 5-1 victory, five different players scored. Servis assisted in four of those goals, while senior back Berta Mata assisted in two.

The RedHawks sit at fourth in the conference behind the Kent State University Golden Flashes (3-8, 2-1 in MAC play).

The Appalachian State University Mountaineers (7-4, 4-0 in MAC play) will travel to Oxford for Miami’s next matchup on Oct. 11. The Mountaineers sit at the top of the MAC with an undefeated record in conference play.

Appalachian State is coming off a shutout defeat to the Liberty University Flames, who currently sit at No. 18 in the country. The Mountaineers fell 5-0.

In last year’s matchup, the RedHawks came away 4-1 after scoring two in the first quarter. Martinez, Negrete and Wearren all had a goal, and Mata finished with one assist.
