9 things to do this October that are way better than waking up next to a traffic cone

Let’s face it: We’ve all had those nights where we wake up with questionable memories and an even more questionable bedfellow (hello, traffic cone). This October, let’s skip the hangover and regrets and instead embrace some fun alternatives on and off campus. Here’s a list of activities that will keep you entertained without making you cringe in the morning!

1. Pumpkin carving contest

Channel your inner artist and compete to carve the scariest (or silliest) pumpkin with your friends and loved ones. Just remember, the goal is to make a masterpiece — not a gourd that looks like it was attacked by a toddler. Bonus points if you can make one that resembles your roommate!

If you work in Residence Life, you might consider hosting a pumpkin carving event for your residents or even just having one yourself.

If pumpkin carving is not your thing, consider baking a pumpkin pie or anything pumpkin-related to embrace the fall spirit.

2. The Peabody Hall haunted house

Get your adrenaline pumping at Miami University’s own local haunted house. Nothing beats the thrill of being scared out of your mind — except maybe the relief of knowing you won’t be waking up next to a traffic cone afterward.

On Oct. 24, Peabody Hall is hosting its annual Helen’s Haunted Hall event from 9-11 p.m., filled with many activities for you to enjoy. From watching a horror movie at Leonard Theatre to being scared out of your mind by our campus actors dressed as Helen Peabody and Leila McKee, there is something for everyone.

3. Hosting a costume karaoke night

Costume Karaoke combines two beloved traditions — Halloween and karaoke — into one unforgettable event.

There’s something inherently amusing about seeing your friends dressed as a unicorn, a giant slice of pizza or even a traffic cone (let’s hope that one doesn’t show up). The costumes set the stage for laughter and fun, making it easier to let go of your inhibitions and enjoy the moment. Plus, who wouldn’t want to see a hot dog perform "I Will Survive" while dancing like nobody’s watching?

4. Host a Friendsgiving Dinner

Gather your friends and whip up a feast. Think of it as Thanksgiving, but with less pressure and no family drama.

Gather all your friends and spread the love, especially those who might be feeling a bit down this fall — let’s be real, who isn’t? Ask the international students and they will tell you that support like this makes all the difference.

5. Attend a fall festival

One festival you don't want to miss is the Operation Pumpkin Festival happening Oct. 11-13 in Hamilton. There, you can marvel at massive pumpkins, browse unique vendors from across Southwest Ohio and enjoy arts and crafts and delicious caramel apples. There’s even a charming pet parade to add to the fun!

If you're unavailable this weekend, don’t worry — there’s more to come! Consider visiting Oxford's Asian Culture Festival hosted by the Asian American Association of Miami on Oct. 18. While it's not your typical fall festival, it offers a unique chance to celebrate Asian cultures, enjoy authentic performances and expand your cultural horizons.

6. Plan a movie marathon

Grab some treats and get cozy for a Halloween movie marathon—whether watching with friends or flying solo, it’s the perfect way to embrace the spooky season! Whether you prefer terrifying horror films or nostalgic Halloween classics, a movie night at home can be far more fun (and stress-free) than a night out.

If you'd rather go to an organized event, there are some great options in the area. The Western Center hosts its Friday Classic Movies every week at 2 p.m., and in October, it features a lineup of scary films. Or, head to the Oxford Community Arts Center on Oct. 25 for Fright Night from 5:30 to 9 p.m. You can catch a double feature of “Beetlejuice” and “Night of the Living Dead” while enjoying the spooky vibes with the local community.

7. Hike, hike, hike

Oxford becomes truly enchanting in the fall, and one of the best ways to experience its seasonal magic is by exploring the scenic hiking trails around Miami. With crisp autumn air and vibrant foliage, it's the perfect time for an outdoor adventure — cool enough to keep you comfortable without the extremes of heat or cold. Whether you're taking a stroll through campus or hiking in nearby parks, fall is the ideal season to soak in Oxford’s natural beauty.

For a peaceful escape, consider visiting Peffer Park, Leonard G. Howell Park, the DeWitt Homestead or the trails near Western Campus by the Western Lodge. Slip on your headphones, cue up some autumn-inspired music, grab a pumpkin spice oat milk latte and enjoy the gentle breeze as you take in the breathtaking fall views. Check this website for more information on the trails.

8. Go horseback riding

There’s something uniquely peaceful about horseback riding in the fall, especially when you're surrounded by vibrant autumn colors. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or trying it for the first time, exploring the trails on horseback is an unforgettable way to enjoy the season.

Several stables around Oxford and Butler County offer guided rides, such as the Nation Road Horse Rental LLC, the Miami University Equestrian Center and Honey Tree Stables.  Imagine trotting through scenic wooded areas, crunching leaves underfoot and feeling the crisp air—it’s a perfect outdoor adventure.

9. Focus

Fall brings a natural shift in energy, and as the days grow cooler, it’s the perfect time to refocus. With fewer distractions and less inclination for casual summer outings, use this season to zero in on your personal goals. Whether picking up a new hobby, advancing in your career, or reflecting on life, fall offers the ideal atmosphere for self-improvement and introspection. Embrace the calm and make this your time to recharge, regroup, and figure out your next steps. It's the season of change — so why not channel that into personal growth?

So there you have it — 10 ways to enjoy October without the impending doom of hangovers or accidental new friendships with traffic cones. Let’s embrace this spooky season with laughter and memorable experiences instead.
