Ohio holds a series of partisan elections to select its State Supreme Court justices. Three of the seven seats on the court are up for election this November. Six candidates are running: three Democrats and three Republicans.
Currently, the court has a 4-3 Republican majority, but if all three Democrats running this election win, the court could flip to a 4-3 Democratic majority, which could mark the first time since 1986 that Democrats have controlled the Ohio Supreme Court.
Whoever wins the Joseph Deters (Republican) vs. Melody Stewart (Democrat) and Megan Shanahan (Republican) vs. Michael Donnelly (Democrat) races will serve a six-year term, beginning on Jan. 2, 2025.
Whoever wins the Dan Hawkins (Republican) vs. Lisa Forbes (Democrat) race will have to run again in 2026 to win a full term, as this election is filling Deters’ seat, which he vacated mid-term to run against Stewart.
