The start of a new school year brings new schedules for students, and many rely on buses to get around. However, riding the bus isn’t always as simple as getting from point A to point B. From requesting stops to navigating the Transit app, the system can seem overwhelming. Don’t worry! This article will help answer all of your busing questions.

Step one: Download the Transit app on your phone

Step two: Search for your destination

Use the app’s search function to enter your desired destination, whether it’s a specific building or a bus stop. The app will show you what bus lines will take you closest to your destination, and which bus stop to get on.

Step three: Timing

“During the weekday, all routes were 84% on time,” said Shawn Cowan, the director of Customer Care and Public Engagement at BRCTA.

This means the app’s time should get you to the bus stop on time, but being early never hurts.

Step four: Getting on the bus

Use the doors at the front of the bus to board and find an open seat. If the bus is full, you can stand and hold onto a handrail.

Step five: Requesting your stop

To ensure the bus stops where you need to get off, pull on the cord running along the windows of the bus as it approaches your stop. This signals the driver to stop at the next stop.

Vic Claude, a first-year psychology major, said he wasn’t aware of this at first.

“I didn’t know that the bus would skip over stops and that I had to request a stop,” Claude said.

If you miss your stop, don’t worry, just get off at the next one. Remember to thank your driver as you exit.

Cecelia Fuentes-Remington, a senior professional writing and international studies double-major, said the bus system is a bonus of Oxford.

“I actually feel a lot more comfortable in Oxford than at home because of the public transport,” Fuentes-Remington said.

Miami has four regular bus routes that serve campus and Oxford. On weekdays, buses run from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., while weekend service is reduced to three routes, with buses running from 11:30 a.m. and 10 p.m.
