Recap: Miami soccer takes victory from Northern Kentucky

The Miami University RedHawks women's soccer team took its second win of the season against the Northern Kentucky University Norse on Thursday evening.

The RedHawks move to 2-1-1 after their 3-1 victory, while the Norse move to 0-4. Both teams are now tied 2-2 in this matchup.

The action in Oxford picked up in the 26th minute of the first half. A foul on Norse senior defender Maria Wiefering let senior midfielder Makenna Morisson take a penalty kick. Morrison’s kick was deflected by sophomore goalie Donna Bundy, but she was able to put the ball in the net off the rebound, giving Miami the lead.

Northern Kentucky responded 10 minutes later with a goal of its own. A foul on junior forward Caroline Palmer allowed the Norse a free kick and a shot on goal by junior forward Meghan Belrose, tying the game 1-1.

Soon after the second-half kickoff, the RedHawks took back the lead. Fifth-year forward Taylor Hamlett notched her first goal of the game and fifth of the season off an assist from first-year midfielder Maris Jennings.

Goalie Dominique Popa kept the Norse out of the goal for the entire second half. Her eight saves in the game kept Northern Kentucky at bay while the RedHawks’ offense added to their lead.

A second penalty kick in the 77th minute gave senior forward Kylee Beinecke her first goal of the season and gave the RedHawks a 3-1 lead. Miami held onto the lead for the remaining minutes. However, the RedHawks have little time to celebrate this victory. On Sunday, the University of South Carolina University Gamecocks (2-0-1) come to Oxford for an afternoon game.

The Gamecocks dominated their first two games of the season with a 5-1 victory over the Furman University Paladins and a 4-1 victory over the College of Charleston Cougars. On Aug. 29, they tied with the Ohio State University Buckeyes 1-1.

Sunday’s matchup will be the first between the RedHawks and the Gamecocks.

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. on Sept. 1 at the Bobby Kramig Field in Oxford.
