The Miami University RedHawks soccer team opened the 2024 season with a 4-0 victory over the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on Thursday night.

The RedHawks took the Bobby Kramig Field in Oxford at 7:30 p.m. and showcased a roster of 15 returners, eight first years and six transfers.

Junior forward Caroline Palmer tacked the first point on the board off a pass from fifth-year forward Taylor Hamlett 33 minutes into the first half. Neither team scored for the remainder of the half, but another pass from Hamlett let sophomore forward Katie O’Malley to increase the team’s lead to 2-0 in the 63rd minute.

With two assists under her belt, Hamlett scored her first goal of the night in the 65th minute, letting the RedHawks take a 3-0 lead. They kept the lead going into the end of the half, when Hamlett scored her second goal off an assist from first-year midfielder Maris Jennings.

With two goals and two assists, Hamlett proved to be a key in the RedHawks’ success last night. Additionally, Jennings played 83 minutes and had one assist in her collegiate debut for Miami.

With the season underway, the RedHawks look ahead to their next opponent, the Tennessee Tech University Golden Eagles, who lost their first game of the season against Samford University. This will be the first matchup between the two teams.
