RedHawks fall short in matchup against Eastern Michigan

The Miami women’s basketball team fell to the Eastern Michigan Eagles Saturday afternoon in Millett Hall.

The RedHawks took a 5-2 lead early in the first quarter but quickly lost momentum. Eastern Michigan scored the next 15 points and led 17-9 by the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter looked a little more promising for Miami. After an 8-point run, the team went into halftime down 35-28.

The ’Hawks continued their run in the second half. Junior guard Peyton Scott sank a basket to tie the game at 38 points apiece and then another to put the ’Hawks up by two.

The Eagles fought back and ended the quarter up 51-46.

Sophomore guard Edyn Battle came up clutch in the fourth quarter, scoring three unanswered baskets with only two and a half minutes left to tie the game at 65.

After Battle’s buckets, Eastern Michigan scored nine straight points to pull away from the RedHawks. The Eagles emerged victorious, 80-69.

“We’re still trying to figure it out,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “We have a roster of kids that want to win, that are trying to figure it out, so I’m just proud that we came out for 40 minutes and competed.”

Scott led the team with 32 points followed by Battle with 14. Junior forward Tajah Foster-Walker put up a fight defensively with 5 blocks.

The loss knocks the RedHawks down to 6-11 overall and 2-6 in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The team will continue its season on Wednesday for another MAC matchup in Toledo against the Rockets. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
