Hockey winless this weekend against Bowling Green

Miami University Hockey went winless this weekend in its final tune-up series before beginning National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) play Nov. 5, against Omaha.

The RedHawks jumped to a 2-0 lead early in Friday’s game. Three and a half minutes into the contest, junior forward Joe Casetti grabbed the rebound from a wide shot by senior forward Jack Olmstead and found the back of the net. Then, early in the second period, junior forward Alec Capstick scored from the point.

That’s where the scoring ended for the RedHawks. Twenty seconds after Capstick scored, Brayden Krieger found Ethan Scardina at the backdoor for a tap-in goal.

Bowling Green tied it up late in the second period. A loose puck drifted into the Miami zone, and sophomore goalie Ludvig Persson made a mad dash for it. He was beaten there by Bowling Green’s Austen Swankler though, and Swankler swatted the puck into the open net for the easiest goal of the night.

The score stayed tied through the third and a five minute three-on-three overtime period. After a chippy game filled with emotion and conflict, the teams skated off the ice with a bitter tie.

On Saturday, Miami entered the third period leading 4-3. But less than a minute into the period, Bowling Green put home a rebound to tie it up. They took the lead about nine minutes later when Persson stopped Coale Norris’s shot but couldn’t freeze it. Swankler crashed the net for his second goal of the weekend.

Bowling Green scored on Miami’s empty net with 15 seconds remaining in the game. The RedHawks weren’t able to capitalize on a five-minute power play after Anton Malmstrom received a major penalty and a game misconduct for head contact with 7:30 left in the contest.

Miami starts its conference schedule the weekend of Nov. 5, with a pair of games against Omaha in Baxter Arena.
