Photo Series: Living in Monterey, CA for the Summer

BY: ALEX KNUTTE

This past summer, I had the opportunity to live and work in Monterey, California. Monterey is located on the central coast of California, about two hours south of San Francisco. It is best known for the Monterey Aquarium, which is also the aquarium that Pixar’s Finding Dory is based on!

This is a picture of Monterey’s Fisherman’s Wharf, a popular tourist destination known for its whale watching tours and clam chowder! My favorite part was the farmers market that took place every Saturday morning, as well as the amazing views.

This view was about a 20 minute walk from my house! I was here almost every day either reading or watching the sunset.

One weekend, I drove up to visit my friend staying in San Francisco. What I loved most about San Francisco (not including the plethora of vegan foods), was the aesthetics and gorgeous views the city has to offer. This is a photo from the Presidio, a giant park that includes scenic outlooks, fields, trails, and golf courses in San Fran.

Another highlight of San Francisco is ChinaTown! SF’s ChinaTown is one of the oldest and most established Chinatowns in the U.S.. It was so fun to explore shops and alleys as well as try new foods!

Of course, San Francisco is known for the Golden Gate Bridge. It wouldn’t be a trip without stopping to snag a picture of that!

My all time favorite part of living in California was the proximity to Big Sur. Big Sur is a large stretch of coastline with incredible scenic views, restaurants, and tons of hiking trails. While hiking in Big Sur, I stumbled across the river seen in the picture above.

Big Sur is known for its iconic McWay Falls waterfall in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. If you are driving through Big Sur, this is a stop that you do not want to miss! When I visited, the end part of the trail was blocked off due to a lack of trail maintenance, but I was still able to capture the beauty of the falls (left corner).

Big Sur Mountains.

The whole drive of Big Sur is on Highway 1, a scenic route that ranges from Northern to Southern California. It is very popular, and can be seen on the TV show “ Big Little Lies” filmed in Monterey. Here is a picture taken from inside my car on Highway 1.

While I am so excited to be back in Oxford, I will miss the gorgeous California scenery. This was the sun rising on my way to the airport.

If you ever have the chance to visit Monterey, make sure to take in every last thing; from the beaches to Big Sur, to Pebble Beach golf course- there is tons to do and see! Monterey truly is a special place.
